Kenya Second to South Africa in Tweeting

According to research results released today by Portland, How Africa Tweets, South Africa is the country most active on twitter, followed by Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt and Morocco respectively.

Not surprisingly, a majority of tweets (57%) were coming from mobile phones. I took part in this survey, I remember (well, with 45,000 tweets I have contributed to research somewhere!). Below is the graphical representation

    Am not really sure that this is a good thing or a bad thing.All this data shows is that kenyans knw how to use their phones

    @mwangi kamau, I’d say it’s a good thing. What the researchers should have mentioned is that this has potential. The Arab spring of 2011 was largely propelled by people using social media like FB and Twitter to communicate. This is something that can be harnessed and used for good. I’m guessing that most of the users are in urban areas probably? Not sure if that was mentioned but with time maybe the phenomenon can spread to other parts of the country. Some parts of Kenya and indeed Africa have been closed to the rest of the world in a way. Mobile telephony and the Internet will slowly change that.
