Pasha Digital Villages

Pasha Digital Villages is an initiative of the Kenya ICT Board in a bid to bring IT (digital) services closer to the people in the villages, who have often have little or no access to these services. The idea is to have centers within rural villages in Kenya where people can get Internet access, computer training, vocational training, ICT retail, access to government services, entertainment and gaming, typing and data entry, printing services, copying and scanning, cell phones and SIM card sales, Mobile Money or other financial services, IT support and services, office supplies and stationary sales, printer supplies, laminating and photography and other IT enabled services.

These centers are more of ICT hubs and less of cyber cafes. Currently, there are about 63 centers (including the 26 centers that were awarded loans to kick start them by the ICT Board recently). This accounts for 30% coverage in the country since 2011. I personally hope that in 5 years we can achieve over 95% coverage, despite the challenges of rural electrification.

One can apply for a loan to set up a Pasha digital village. The project, run through the Ministry of Information and Communication, is a blueprint to achieving Vision 2030, which recognizes that the provision of ICT goods and services in Kenya is important for enabling economic and social development.

The digital village project is an integral part of an innovative public private partnership for taking ICTs to the rural communities in Kenya. Already, the board is collaborating with CISCO and Intel and is currently in talks with Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) to further advance the ICT skills of the Pasha Managers and increase ICT advocacy in the rural areas.

All 210 constituencies are earmarked to benefit from the initiative.

    I started hear about Pasha centers about 4 years ago. is there an existing list/map of ones that have been setup and their locations so that it stops being just a vision.

      Let me ask about a visualization/mapping of the Pasha Centers. 30% over a period of 4 years isn’t achieving much!

    These are the hyped up stories that people get, while in the real sense Pasha started out as a Grant that degenerated to a loan. The trainees were quite enthusiastic when applying and receiving training, with information that they would all get the money as soon as they had well drafted business plan.

    It dawned on them that only one person in a constituency, out of the over 50 per constituency who trained would be getting the (no-longer grants) loans.

    That’s how successful this has been.

    That’s why I commend you for painting a very nice picture of what happened. FYI Pasha has been ongoing since 2006 and you call 26 pasha centres a success?

      Oh, so it’s not from last year but from 2006? That’s a long time for only 63 centers in a country whose population is 40 million, with only about 4? million people accessing the internet.

    First of all, the idea of a loaning scheme through Family Bank was the beginning of its failure.Sincerely Pasha concept was good but it has smartly failed. Why beat about the bush?If one has interest on pasha reports follow am currently doing a research on the so called digital village networks.

    I just hope there will be also better 3g connectivity for the interior centres, i sometimes relate to that faiba advert by jamii telcom when I remember the internet speeds I experienced in a place called kuria, supposing they were to use a mobile service provider as the isp then that would become one pain in the the neck unless they assume that all their customers are from the area and do not know what internet speeds are and are just eager to learn and use ICT services.
